How do Search Engines Handle Click Fraud

If you are a advertiser, you would frequently wonder if the expenditure on your ad networks are being utilized the right way. You would also be aware of the numerous types of illegal techniques with which fraudsters earn out of your advertisement. Some of the most common click frauds include:

  • Automated Clicks or Click Bots
  • Manual Ad Clicks
  • Pay to Click Sites
  • Affiliate or contextual clicks

Though Search Engines have become largely aware of these techniques, there are still considerable numbers of click frauds happening every month. However, click frauds have decreased compared to couple of years ago.

Google uses automated algorithms which analyzes the nature of clicks on its advertisements. Its algorithm can eliminate almost all the common click fraud techniques. However, detailed investigation or manual testing is not effective with Google.

It is recommended that file a claim if you find any unusual activities or clicks on your advertisements. Unless you file a claim, Google or any other pay-per-click company does not deal with it seriously. You might not even get a reply back from them.

Shuman Ghosemajumder, Google’s Business Product Manager for Trust and Safety explains that Google Ad Traffic Quality Team checks for any unusual behavior in hundreds of data points. He also mentions that there is a three-stage system maintained by Google for detecting invalid clicks.

  1. Proactive Real-Time Filters [Automated Algorithms]
  2. Proactive Offline Analysis [Manual Checks]
  3. Reactive Investigations [Only when you file a claim or there is misuse for a huge amount]
