How to use Google Talk on Linux
GTalk has become extremely popular due to its ease of use and simple installation. Google talk has been used extensively among corporates and students.
Linux users can also now use GTalk chat with Gaim. Gaim, a multi-protocol instant messaging (IM) client for use in Linux, MacOS X, BSD and Windows is compatible with AIM and ICQ (Oscar protocol).
Gaim can now be used to connect to Google Talk server and chat with GTalk contacts. Configuring Gaim to connect to GTalk Server is given below:
- Choose the “Accounts” tab and select “Add” in the login screen
- Here you would find the option protocol with a dropdown
- Choose “Jabber” in the protocol dropdown box
- Provide your GTalk address or the Gmail address as your screenname.
- Please do not provide the @gmail.com extension. Only provide the username
- Replace the server name “jabber.org” to “gmail.com”
- Provide your gmail password
- Now click on the “Show More” option and make sure “Use TLS is available”box is checked
- Provide the connect server information as “talk.google.com”
- Now, you are ready to connect to GTalk and start chatting with your Google chat friends
What about voice??
Nobody uses gtalk just for plain chat. Only the voice feature is somewhat useful. Rest is same as whatever we get in yahoo or MSN.
Pretty sure, google won’t ever release gtalk for linux. Google = Microsoft 2.0.
Alternatives are there, but none from google itself.
